Road Transport Department (JPJ) counters nationwide have been packed with Malaysians eager to clear outstanding traffic summonses following the government's offer of a 50 per cent discount, which runs until Dec 30.

The two-month initiative has drawn an overwhelming response as citizens take advantage of significant savings to settle long-overdue offences.

In Shah Alam, logistics agent Mohd Yusof Othman, 51, said he went straight to the JPJ counter after hearing about the offer.

"I wanted to settle my speeding summons along the North-South Expressway near Behrang. The original fine was RM300, but I only paid RM150 today. The whole process took less than 20 minutes, and the officers were very clear in their explanations," he said.

Delivery worker Amirul Mokhtar, 35, said the initiative was more than just a discount, calling it "a reflection of the government's concern for the financial burden faced by the people."

"I had two summonses for not using the motorcycle lane earlier this year. Once JPJ announced the offer, I immediately paid all RM300. It really helps ease financial pressure when the cost of living is so high," he said.

In Kuala Terengganu, lorry driver Muhammad Hanafi Jusoh, 43, settled five outstanding summonses for overdue road tax and missed inspections.

"I was supposed to pay RM1,500, but with this new offer, I only paid RM750," he said.

In Kota Bharu, physically challenged lorry driver Muhammad Awang, 36, said he finally managed to clear eight old summonses after saving up for six months.

"I needed to renew my vocational licence, which expires in two weeks, so I had to settle them all. From a total of RM2,400, I only paid RM1,200," he said.

Another lorry driver, Mohd Hafizzal, 36, said he had to borrow from friends to pay off eight long-overdue fines.

"I borrowed RM1,200 to pay off eight JPJ summonses, most of them for expired road tax. I couldn't miss this chance since the discount offered by JPJ is very generous," he said.

Civil servant Mahsuri Mokhtar, 43, said the offer made it easier to clear her fines before selling her car.

"When I checked, I realised I still had some unpaid fines. With this discount, it's much easier to clear them," she said.

According to Kosmo, the 50 per cent discount covers most traffic-related offences except those under court action or involving accidents and remains open until Dec 30.
