Cheam June Wei strengthened his claim as the king of the Lin Dan Cup after capturing a record fifth men's singles title in Jin Cheng, China on Saturday.

The Malaysian defeated China's Ren Cheng Ming 15-11, 15-6 in the final to add another trophy to his remarkable collection in the series promoted by Chinese badminton legend Lin Dan.

June Wei also pocketed 200,000 yuan (RM119,700) for his triumph.

It marked his second Lin Dan Cup title this year after winning the Chenzhou leg, where he edged former world No. 11 Zhao Jun Peng 15-13, 9-15, 15-13 in a dramatic final.

On that occasion, June Wei recovered from 8-13 down in the deciding game by reeling off seven consecutive points to complete the comeback.

His latest success extends an impressive record in the competition, having lifted titles in Shenzhen in 2023, Macau in 2024 and Jin Cheng last year before adding Chenzhou and another Jin Cheng crown this season.

The five victories underline June Wei's remarkable consistency in the Lin Dan Cup, where he has enjoyed considerably more success than on the international circuit.

His earlier four titles had already earned him a combined 1.1 million yuan in prize money. Saturday's victory takes his Lin Dan Cup earnings from those five triumphs to 1.3 million yuan (RM778,000).

Though June Wei has struggled to reproduce the same level of results on the Badminton World Federation circuit, his Lin Dan Cup exploits have provided a lucrative and successful platform for the independent shuttler.
